Summary:

This presentation will cover the early history of medicine and veterinary medicine and then, the development of equine dentistry as a specialism in the late 1800s and early 1900s, a time when the importance of horses in transport, agriculture, industry, and military use was at its peak.  The development of dental instruments (many designs that are still in use) and published research into dental disorders and treatments at that time will be presented.

The decline in the importance of horses during the first 60 years of the 1900s was accompanied by a total neglect of equine dentistry with a few exceptions including Dr Becker whose work will be summarised. The revival of studies in equine dentistry from the 1980s onwards accompanied the resurgence of horse numbers, now almost exclusively for leisure use.  The limitations of our equine dental knowledge at that time and consequently of dangerous dental procedures will be shown.

The many dental anatomical and pathological research studies over the last 35 years will be described along with the advances in sedatives, imaging (including CT), equine dentistry training and certification, and equine dental instrumentation. The two speakers will give their impressions of the current state of equine dentistry worldwide and present what they think will be the future of this rapidly developing field.
